Yet another victim of humanity yet doesn’t make front page news is now safe and her name is Mabel. The Stand Up For Pits Foundation proudly donated a grant to this little hippo who is now and in the care of a great rescue doing great work in Chicago called Players for Pits. We thank them for giving Mabel a much deserved chance and we are honored to help.

“Today we are able to welcome Mabel into the Players For Pits family with the help of or friends over at the Stand Up For Pits Foundation! SUFP is donating $1000 to the care of Mabel so that she has a chance to receive the best this world has to offer. After a life of abuse and neglect, Mabel now has the support needed to help her find her happiness with a forever family. Mabel will need extensive medical treatment. She suffers from demodex mange, and while it is not contagious, it is an extremely painful skin condition brought on by living in filth and poor conditions.
We met Mabel the day after she was brought into our suburban animal control facility. She was shaking constantly in absolute fear of us. After a good 15 minute of patience and comfort, she finally allowed us to pet her red, hot skin and then made her biggest move of faith by walking up to us and then laying in our laps. Some of the vet technicians at the facility came in to check on us and it was then that we learned how bad her medical prognosis really was. We learned that the day she was brought in she was found outside in sub zero degree temperature weather. She started pouring blood from her back end when she laid down and the vets believe she had just given birth within the last day or so. The area was checked for babies and despite the police’s best efforts, none were recovered. We believe she was either dumped by her ‘owner’ or escaped from their house. We can do nothing but pray the puppies somehow survived. Her puppies could have also been stillborn which would cause ‘money hungry’ owners to dump her out of pure anger. We will never know unfortunately… Mabel forgives people as she shows us everyday but she still fears most. But despite however scared she is, she still does not react or display any negative behaviors.
As Stand Up For Pits always says, Mabel is what we call Inherently good!”
