Yesterday, Lucille became lethargic, so we moved up our specialist appointment to today. Her blood work results yesterday were awful. She improved a few days ago, which gave us hope but yesterday her kidney values and chemistry panel were terrible. Her creatinine and SDMA (marker of kidney damage) are the highest they’ve been, indicating that her kidneys are irreparably damaged from this chronic bacterial infection. Sadly, Babesia and ehrlichia have wreaked havoc on her body. Today, we met with a specialist and based on Lucille’s blood panel, her prognosis is grim and given the advanced nature of her kidney disease, there is no coming back from it. Lucille is dying.
Lucille’s quality of life is and will always be the priority and we do not and will never condone or prolong suffering.
Tonight she is in a new specialty hospital getting fluids and 24 hour monitoring and did undergo, what is called an esophagostomy tube. This will provide her with optimal nutrition and fluid management. This will make it easier to give her her meds without causing undue stress, and will help her feel better. She got a full cardiology work up to determine the ideal volume of fluids she should get for her outpatient care. Lucille will live out the rest of her life knowing love and freedom and she will go to the beach and parks and be spoiled every single minute. Her medications will remain the same, with the exception of 3 antibiotics that she’ll be finished with soon (for babesia and UTI). Her internal medicine doctor also added a new medication; one that has shown great promise in lowering blood pressure & protein loss in dogs with protein-losing nephropathy.
Lucille deserves to live pain free and know love and myself and others are seeing to it that that happens. We thank you all for your love and support and prayers but sadly, this is what humans did to her and it is too much for her to overcome.
