Pit bull is a term used to describe a type of dog based solely on it’s appearance. American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed but most dogs labeled “pit bulls” are actually mutts. Boxers, bulldogs, staffies, dogos, mastiffs etc. simply put – they are dogs. Crazy right? “Pit bulls” are also smart, loyal, funny and beloved family members to millions of people all over the world who are lucky enough to loved by them unconditionally. You of all people know how dangerous and reckless fear based ignorance and perpetuating hate towards sentient beings can be. Your “punchline” is exactly what has contributed to millions of these dogs losing their lives. “Pit bulls” continue to be the most victimized and discriminated against dogs on earth. Wrongly vilifing them – even in the name of comedy – is not okay. It’s deeply hurtful, makes saving them harder and it’s a disappointing cheap shot. We know it’s not your fault these dogs are getting slaughtered but perpetuating fear based ignorance about them on a platform your size, is and this isn’t the first time your show has done this. So today we are respectfully asking you to stop. Believe it or not Jim – the horrific plight of these dogs directly affects you, your family, loved ones and community. The horrors against them is a direct reflection of a broken society and is everyone’s problem – including yours. Just 7 miles from the El Capitan pit bull type dogs are being raped by humans, stabbed, starved, neglected, and killed in plain sight. And as you you and your audience laughed at them last night countless lay dead in Los Angeles shelter freezers. If you’d like to learn about what is happening in your community and about these victims of humanity we will take you to Skid Row and our city and county shelters so you can see for yourself. You seem to have a kind heart. If you knew the truth you’d likely never make them a punchline again. You are respected for using your voice for marginalized communities – please show the same respect to those who use ours for victims with no voice at all.
